Zen and the Art of Cocktail Making (and Joke Telling)
You know, it’s dead difficult to make anything vaguely computing-related sound funny to ‘non-believers.’ Even the classic joke:
How many software engineers does it take to change a lightbulb?
None, it’s a hardware problem.
doesn’t make the masses laugh!
This pains me.
Greatly.
Anyways, today was the Computer society’s Linux Installfest, which was followed closely by a little social gathering of a few friends at Sarann’s house.
Linux has always been regarded as a bit of a mysterious ubergeeky operating system. In recent months, nay years, it has slowly and surely become a strong contender to Windows (even if the Wireless stuff is still in an unstable state of flux) So today, under the benevolent and watchful eye of Drew, the president of CompSoc, and the skills of Graham and Mark, the support staff who were on hand to help, many Linux users were born.
I have only one thing to say about that: GENTOO ROCKS!!
Not much happened in the Installfest. Events went thus:
- The little talk at the beginning of the event went rather well. I cheered when somebody wanted Gentoo installed.
- There were many females there. I actually didn’t realise that there were that many females in the School of Computing, never mind in the fresher’s year!
- No, the Computer Science chick wasn’t there. Why would she be? She could install Linux on her PC by herself without any problems at all! AND prolly bugfix for it! *forlorn sigh*
- Craig decided that he was going to help too. Maybe not the best idea in the world, but he only nearly broke 2 computers! Which for Craig, who has his own server full of error messages, is quite an achievement! (Though he says he’s going to make this year a living hell for me, especially after I lightsabred him. Imaginarily. Not with a real lightsabre. Cos cool as that would be, it would also be bad.)
Other than the above, nowt much happened at the event. You could say it was an uneventful event! Guffaw guffaw… *sigh* tough crowd…
So, on to Sarann’s cocktail party. Quite a nice little gathering - Sarann, Michelle, Anne (Sarann’s friend), Phil, Chris, B, Kieran, Matt, Kat and Graham were all there, and we all ate Doritos and salsa (though Chris did try a cookie with sour cream and chive dip on it. Allegedly it’s quite tasty. Dunno myself - never mix cookies with anything
) We were creating cocktails of the rather alcoholic and very potent variety, in a smoothie maker (which gave them a nice frothy texture and which, incidentally, Phil broke!), and we all adjourned into the sitting room.
Somehow, and I believe it was B’s fault, we ended up telling really bad jokes (the joke I told was the poor attempt at the top of this post) which involved ‘tea bags’, grapes & coconuts, various one-liners, and the obligatory ‘Englishman, Irishman and Scottishman’ jokes. I would write the jokes that I can remember here, but there are two problems with that:
- I’m crap at telling jokes, especially other people’s jokes.
- I doubt I could remember them with enough clarity, especially after the concotions I’ve imbibed tonight!
So, meh!
One thing I can write with some mental clarity is that Facebook is rather slow at updating my feeds. It’s a good job I know what the hell I’m on about, and know how to sort it out with some panache and flair. ![]()
